A public information evening, about the Wind Turbine proposal, for people living in the Small Grant Scheme Area was held in the Beehive Pub on the 5th. November 2013.
At the meeting a detailed presentation was given by Tim Ryan:
• A 500KW single community wind turbine is proposed for the generation and sale of electricity to the national grid for the benefit of those living in in the Ballynagran Basin Community i.e. the people most effected by the landfill.
• The proposed wind turbine is approximately the same height as a 220KV pylon, like those which can be seen on the top of Black Hill, and planned to be located to the north west of the landfill site at Ballynagran in an area away from any residential houses.
• Discussions will be held with landowners in the area.
• It could generate electricity for approximately 250 homes and a regular income for the community to be controlled by a community trust or similar fund.
• Allowing for estimated on-going costs there is a potential profit of up to €50,000 per annum, depending on the percentage grant funding secured.

In summary
• We believe that this is a real opportunity for the community most affected by the landfill to finally benefit from the community levy fund.
• If this turbine is installed, regardless of the future of the landfill, the Ballynagran Basin Community will have a secure source of income into the future.
• This project could lead to other opportunities for the wider Ballynagran Energy Plus community to benefit from other grants or initiatives.
Questionnaire
After the meeting an anonymous questionnaire was distributed to gather information on the attitudes and opinions on the proposed community turbine. See example Wind Turbine Survey
The questionnaire found that the majority of attendees were in favour in principle for the project as proposed with 27 in favour and 4 not in favour.
